Your browser records

Saved places, notes, forecasts, observations, Night Records and storm history use browser storage, without cloud backup or syncing across browsers, devices or website addresses. Observations can contain precise coordinates, time, direction and motion choice. Names and notes are excluded from online checks.

Online features

Information you enter and device location or direction you permit help provide local conditions, plans and observation checks.

• Scans: ShortYeti receives coordinates rounded to three decimal places. Our server sends coordinates to the National Weather Service (NWS), USGS and MeteorShowerCal, and a surrounding area to NASA EONET. Rounding does not make a location anonymous.
• Observations and storms: Checks also send relevant times, direction, motion and weather-office identifiers to ShortYeti. Aircraft checks send coordinates to ADSB.lol; launch checks send an observation-related time window to The Space Devs. Saving observations can trigger scan checks too.
• Plans and places: Your browser contacts NWS directly for coverage, time zones, forecasts and alerts, including when saving or moving places, opening plans or comparisons, selecting places and refreshing. NWS receives coordinates, potentially to five decimal places, plus your IP and browser/request details.
• Optional map: Choosing “Load observing map” sends OpenStreetMap your IP, browser details, this site's origin and viewed areas. City/town search uses ShortYeti's bundled dataset without an external geocoder.

Server-to-provider requests use our hosting infrastructure; the application does not forward your browser's IP in them.

Hosting and support

Vercel hosts and protects the website. Logs and diagnostics can include IP, browser details, request URLs/parameters, times, status and errors. Provider-request URLs can contain coordinates. Web Analytics is disabled; the beta has no installed advertising or behavioral-analytics integration. ShortYeti does not respond to browser Do Not Track signals. External services can receive information across sites under their own practices. Processing may occur outside the United States.

Support emails include your address, messages and attachments, used to respond and investigate. Copies remain in the support inbox and forward to the owner's mailbox in the same Microsoft 365 tenant. Only the owner reads support messages; Microsoft processes and stores them. Please avoid unnecessary sensitive information. We may disclose information when legally required.

Retention and your choices

Browser records can remain until you or your browser remove them. Use Plan's saved-place deletion controls or clear this site's browser data. Clearing site data removes local records irreversibly; it does not erase provider logs or email. Plan downloads can include coordinates and notes and are not complete record backups.

Support correspondence may remain after resolution; no fixed automatic deletion deadline is promised. Hosting logs, caches and provider records follow separate retention practices. NWS says request logs may be retained indefinitely for security.

You can revoke location/orientation permissions and leave the map unloaded. Email support@shortyeti.com to request access, correction or deletion, ask us to reconsider a response, or report that a child supplied personal information. Verification and legal exceptions may apply; applicable law may provide additional rights. Independent providers handle their own records. Avoid private records on shared devices; no system is completely secure.

Changes

Updates appear here with a revised effective date. Material changes receive a website notice, plus any legally required notice or consent before they apply.
