SHORTYETI / HELP

A little help in the field.

ShortYeti's web tools are in beta and free to use. Start on Home, explore the current context in Signal, then use Plan to look for a viewing window. No account is required.

Help opens in a new tab so you can keep your original Signal tab open. Save or finish a draft there before closing or reloading it.

From a signal to a plan

  1. In Signal, choose the example area or use your location after reading the location explanation. A scan brings together source context; its interest score is not a safety rating.
  2. Choose Save this place to keep the current place, or browse places in Plan. Saving checks US forecast coverage and time zone with the National Weather Service. It does not choose a night or fetch a full plan.
  3. In Plan, search for a US city or town, select a saved place, or explore the example cities. Use Check viewing windows for a selected new place, then choose a night. Windows cover the Moon, planets and bright stars; satellite, meteor and aurora context stays in Signal Overview.

City and town results are approximate centers, not addresses or recommended observing sites. Confirm access, terrain and a clear horizon yourself. Plan needs supported US National Weather Service coverage; a search result alone does not establish forecast coverage.

The observing map is optional and has its own load action and data explanation. Search and the saved-place list work without loading it.

Save a place or export a plan

Keep up to 20 saved places. Rename a saved place or add an optional note in Plan. A comparison shows up to four saved places alongside four examples; selecting a later saved place does not delete the others.

For the selected plan, use Copy or Download plan to keep a text summary with its source and timing details. This can include the place name, coordinates and your note, so review it before sharing.

A plan download is not a backup of all your records. There is no complete observation, Night Record or storm-history export or import tool in this beta.

Keep your local records safe

Saved places, notes, observations, Night Records and event history use this browser's storage on this website. They do not sync to another browser, another website address or the iPhone app. Private browsing, clearing site data or browser storage limits can remove or prevent saving data. Browser storage is not a backup.

If a save fails, keep that tab open and use the available retry action. An unfinished draft can be lost when the tab is closed or reloaded. Do not clear site data as a troubleshooting step when it holds your only copy. A retry cannot recover data already deleted outside ShortYeti.

When a reading is incomplete

Unavailable, incomplete, unverified or older readings do not mean conditions are quiet. A successful scan can still have missing sources. Check each source's time, coverage and limitations, and refresh explicitly when you want a new reading. No matching result means only that a check found no match within its scope.

Do not rely on ShortYeti for emergency warnings or an all-clear. Check official weather alerts and local authorities before making safety decisions.

What about ShortYeti Field?

ShortYeti Field, our mobile app, is coming soon. The web beta is available now. Web records stay in this browser and do not sync to the mobile app.
